As part of the Community Nutrition Education program, a Dietitian was able to speak with over 500 school-aged children about general healthy meal planning and the amount of added sugar to many of the foods and beverages they might like to enjoy.

After discussing the different food groups and which nutrients each group provides for the body, appropriate portions of healthy foods were shown & the students were able to get their hands on food models to create some healthy meals. Then the students were introduced with how to calculate the amount of added sugar to foods and beverages. Students shared why too much sugar in the body can be a bad thing. Several comparisons were made between foods and beverages in order for the students to have a visual reminder of the amount of added sugar and teach the students how to make better choices more often than not.
